Acoustic or Electric — Which First?
This is the most common first question, and the answer matters. We recommend acoustic for 85% of beginners for these reasons:
Acoustic — Why Start Here
- No amp needed — play anywhere
- Harder strings build finger strength faster
- Better foundation for technique
- Lower total cost
- Works for Bollywood, folk, pop
Electric — When It Makes Sense
- You specifically want to play rock/metal
- Lighter strings are easier on fingers
- Needs amp (₹3,000–5,000 extra cost)
- Louder practice — neighbours hear you
- More gear to maintain
Our verdict: Start acoustic. If after 3 months you are primarily interested in rock or metal, switch to electric. The skills transfer completely.
Best Acoustic Guitars Under ₹5,000
This budget is tight but workable if you know what to avoid. The biggest risk at this price point is terrible action (string height) that makes the guitar nearly unplayable. Always get a setup done by a technician (costs ₹300–500) when buying in this range.
Kadence Slowhand Series
The best value option in India right now. Kadence is an Indian brand that understands the Indian humidity and price point. The Slowhand consistently has lower action than comparably priced imports. Rosewood fretboard, decent tuners. Needs a setup out of the box but it is worth it.
Givson G-200 / Venus Series
The classic Indian beginner guitar. Available at every music shop from Chandni Chowk to Laxmi Nagar. Quality is inconsistent — inspect each unit carefully before buying. Avoid buying online as you cannot check action. The Venus has slightly better build quality than the entry G-200.
Hobner L-250
Another Indian budget option with reasonable consistency. The body size is slightly smaller than standard dreadnought, which some beginners find more comfortable. Not the best for projection but fine for learning purposes.
Best Acoustic Guitars ₹5,000 – ₹10,000
This is the sweet spot for most serious beginners. At this price, you start getting factory setups, better tonewoods, and reliable tuning stability.
Yamaha F280 / F310
The gold standard recommendation for this range globally. Yamaha's quality control is superb — you get consistent action and intonation out of the box. The F280 is purely acoustic; F310 adds a slightly better spruce top. Yamaha India has good service centres in Delhi.
Cort AD810
Korean brand with solid manufacturing. Better projection than the Yamaha F280 in our experience — it sounds loud and full for the price. Sitka spruce top, mahogany back and sides. Action may need minor adjustment but is generally playable out of the box.
Best Acoustic Guitars ₹10,000 – ₹20,000
Fender CD-60S
Solid spruce top (not laminate) — the biggest upgrade at this price. A solid top resonates more richly and improves over years of playing. Scalloped bracing gives it a strong, balanced sound. Excellent choice if you are committed to learning seriously.
Yamaha F600 / FG800
Yamaha's step up from the F310. The FG800 has a solid sitka spruce top and scalloped bracing. This is the guitar you buy when you are ready to commit to the instrument for several years. Stays in tune well even in Delhi's temperature swings.
What to Check Before Buying
| Check | How | What's Acceptable |
|---|---|---|
| Action at 12th fret | Press 1st and last fret, measure gap at 12th | E-string: 2–2.5mm · e-string: 1.5–2mm |
| Neck straightness | Sight down the neck from headstock | Slight curve (relief) is fine, warping is not |
| Tuning stability | Tune up and play for 5 minutes | Should stay within 5 cents over a session |
| Fret buzz | Play every fret on every string | Minor buzz on open strings OK, on fretted notes not OK |
| Binding & finish | Visual inspection | No cracks, loose binding, or finish bubbles |
For the best selection of guitars to try in person, visit these areas:
- → Chandni Chowk (Dariba Kalan area) — largest concentration of music shops in Delhi, good for comparison shopping
- → Laxmi Nagar Market — a few good shops, convenient if you are attending classes here
- → Karol Bagh — mid to high-range options, reputed dealers
- → Online (Flipkart, Amazon) — only for guitars with 30-day return policy if you can not check action before buying
