How to Read Guitar Tabs
Guitar tabs (tablature) are the simplest way to learn songs without knowing how to read standard music notation. A tab shows you which string to play and which fret to press.
The 6 lines represent the 6 strings of the guitar. The bottom line is the thickest string (E), the top line is the thinnest (e). Numbers on the lines tell you which fret to press. 0 means play the string open (no fret).
- Numbers on the tab = fret number to press
- 0 = open string (play without pressing any fret)
- Numbers stacked vertically = play all strings at once (a chord)
- Numbers in sequence = play notes one after another (a melody or riff)
