12 popular English songs that every Indian beginner guitarist should learn — with chords, strumming patterns, and capo tips.

Why Learn English Songs?

English songs are often structurally simpler than Bollywood songs — they use fewer chord changes, have more consistent rhythm, and the lyrics are easy to follow. They are also excellent for understanding strumming feel and tempo since most are recorded at a consistent, clear tempo.

Many of the most-loved English songs (Wonderwall, Let Her Go, Shape of You) are regularly requested at gatherings in India and are part of every confident guitarist's repertoire.

Before You Start
  • Learn the 8 open chords first: Em, Am, Dm, C, G, D, E, A — see our basic chords guide
  • Capo numbers in the table are optional — they match the original song's key for singing
  • All songs in the Beginner category use only open chords
  • Strum with a pick for English pop/rock songs — finger strumming works but a pick sounds more authentic

Tips for Playing English Songs

Recommended Learning Order
  • Week 1–2: Knockin' on Heaven's Door — only 3 chords, slow tempo, immediately satisfying
  • Week 3–4: Let Her Go — introduces fingerpicking OR simple strumming on 4 chords
  • Month 2: Wonderwall — slightly trickier chord shapes (Em7, Dsus4) but extremely well-known
  • Month 3: Perfect or Shape of You — depends on whether you prefer ballad or groove
  • Month 4+: Hotel California or Nothing Else Matters — these require fingerpicking and barre chords
