When to Choose Electric Guitar First
There are situations where starting on electric makes more sense:
- Your goal is specifically rock, metal, or blues from day one
- You have a teacher or mentor who plays electric and can guide you
- Finger pain is a real issue — electric strings are genuinely easier on fingers
- You already have an amplifier at home from a family member
Even in these cases, we recommend spending 1–2 months on acoustic basics first. The fundamentals of chords, strumming, and music theory transfer 100% to electric guitar.
What About Classical Guitar?
Classical (nylon string) guitar is a third option that is not discussed enough. Nylon strings are softer on fingers, making them great for young learners (8–12 years). They are also well-suited for Indian classical music, Carnatic, and Spanish flamenco styles. The downside: nylon strings sound very different from the steel-string sound most Bollywood songs are recorded with.
The Sitar Argument
Some people learn sitar before guitar in India, and there is a popular myth that sitar makes guitar harder. This is not true — both are string instruments with frets, and sitar experience generally makes guitar learning easier, not harder.
